altered video box

There is one thing that most of us crafters are always short of…. storage.  So why not make the most of the things you may have lying around at home and help save the planet too by recycling your old video cases and prettying them up to hold some of your stash.

What you will need :-

Video cases

A4 sheets of patterned paper (one for each case you wish to alter)

Double sided tape

Fiskars embossing tool

Fiskars craft knife or scissors

Fiskars cutting mat

Black pen

apply ds tape

First of all cover all edges of the front and the back of the case with Double Sided tape, keeping as near to the edge of the case as possible.

line up to edge of paper

Then remove the protective layer from the tape and lay your chosen sheet of patterned  paper face down onto your cutting mat.  Place your case with the long edge (where it opens)  lined up with the narrow edge of your paper.  Hold the box up slightly to prevent sticking the rest of the case to the paper before you have it lined up properly.

score with tool

Once you have aligned your case and adhered it to the paper use your embossing tool to score along the paper using the back of the case as a guide.  This will help to cover the spine of the case smoothly.

score paper along spine

Stand your case up on its spine keeping it firm against the paper and then score along the spine again.

turn over and smooth with palm of hand

Turn the case over and remove the protective layer from the tape, holding the paper away from the tape with one hand so that you don’t stick it down accidentaly and then smooth the paper onto this side of the cover with the palm of your hand, working from the spine towards the outer edge to prevent the paper from buckling or creasing.

trim edge with knife

Turn your case over once more and remove the excess paper with your craft knife or scissors keeping as close to the case edge as possible.

trim round open box

Then open your box and holding it firm with one hand remove the excess paper from the remaining edges.

lettering

Finally draw freehand lettering with a black pen onto  co-ordinating papers and cut them out with your craft knife or scissors and apply these to the covered spine of your case.  You could also use a Fiskars stencil plate for your lettering or use computer generated text.

If you have video cases with the protective cover pocket still intact you can remove the old cover and draw a template around it before cutting the template out and decorating it in your own way.  You can then replace the old cover with your newly created one and not have to use DS tape at all.  You can then change these covers as often as you like to suit your mood.

Use your decorated covers to store buttons, ribbons, chipboard, charms,  and atc’s.  As you will be able to stack them on top of one another you will see from the spine what is enclosed so no more searching for those little goodies you may otherwise have trouble finding.

If you have any tips for recycled goodies to store our stash in we would love you to share them with us and give us a little inspiration …. so what are you waiting for :)

Happy Creating

Chris xx
