floral bag

Today I would like to share this fabric flower tutorial with you. I hope that you will gain some inspiration from it and I would love to see your own version of the flowers on your own creation. The instuctions below follow the steps in the slideshow. Enjoy :)

Supplies

  1. Fiskars shape template (circles)
  2. Fiskars Scissors
  3. Co-ordinating felt sheets (or fabric)
  4. Paper flowers.
  5. Water soluble fabric pen or disappearing ink pen.
  6. Fabric glue or sewing thread and needle.
  7. 3d fabric paint and/or buttons for embellishment.

Step 1. Place the Fiskars shape template on top of your chosen material (fabrics other than felt will need to be stiffened first with an iron on interfacing or similar product.) Using the pen draw round the inside of the circle, I chose the four smallest shapes on the template but you can choose whichever suits your project. Use 3-4 shapes in staggered sizes for each flower.

Step 2. Using Fiskars scissors carefully cut around your drawn shape.

Step 3. Mark the approx centre of the circle with the pen.

Step 4. Using the straight edge of the template (or a ruler if you prefer) draw a line across the centre of the shape.

Step 5. Turn the circle 90 degrees and repeat step 4.

Step 6. Continue turning and drawing lines through the other segments as you can see on the slideshow diagram.

Step 7. Using Fiskars scissors cut each drawn line but stop short of the centre. All sizes should be cut the same, making sure you leave the centre intact. Note the black broken line on the slideshow picture I have added as a guide to how far you should cut.

Step 8. Turn the flower pieces over so that you cannot see the pen marks then layer your chosen flower pieces (including the paper flowers if this is your preference) securing one to the other with a drop of fabric glue. Or if you prefer you can layer the shapes until you have the depth you require and sew through all layers with a needle and thread.

Step 9. Add 3d fabric paints to the centre of your completed flowers to decorate. You could also decorate the outside edges of the petals in this way too, or add buttons or brads to the centre of the flowers as an alternative decoration.

Step 10. Attach your completed flowers to your desired creations.

I have added my flowers to a felted handbag but they would look equally as nice on a greetings card, scrapbook page or indeed added to a felt bracelet or made into a brooch. There are so many uses for them and they would look wonderful in a variety of different colours and fabrics so I do hope you will enjoy making them.

 Happy creating :)

Chris xx
