DT projects – Steph ~ using scraps!
by Steph Baxter
It’s one of my best friend’s birthday today, so I thought it would be a fun idea to make a birthday card for my DT post this time round.
With all the new goodies I’ve been seeing that are being released at CHA this week, it got me thinking that I had better cut down my current stash to make room for all the new stuff that I want to get. It seems a shame to just throw things away though, so I’ve decided to make a concerted effort to use up some of the hundreds of paper scraps I’ve got sitting in a little drawer unit in my craft space. So the first thing I did to use up my scraps was to make the card for this post.

Firstly, I gathered together a little pile of scraps that I carefully picked out to coordinate with each other. It’s funny how you forget some of the things you have hiding away in your stash, and I managed to dig out some papers that matched that were once big favourites of mine.
I cut a piece of Vanilla cardstock to 8.5×5.5 inches using my Fiskars Paper Trimmer, folded it in half to give a standard card size of 4.25×5.5 inches and set it aside.

Next I cut a circle of patterned paper using the ShapeCutter and Cutting Mat, as well as the Circle Template, and set that aside. On a piece of Kraft cardstock, I stamped a ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment using the Stamp Block Set – I love the different sizes of the stamp blocks…you’ve got every size you could possibly need in there! Then I adhered that on top of the circle I had previously cut. I then adhered those pieces to the front of my card.
Next, I cut a strip of patterned paper and punched it with the Boundary Water Border Punch (again, I LOVE this tool…it’s surprisingly versatile…definitely doesn’t have to be used just on watery theme projects), and stuck the strip of paper to the card.
I then created a pinwheel out of patterned paper using the Paper Trimmer to cut a square of 2″ x 2″, folding the square in half along both diagonals, and using my trusty Fiskars scissors to cut along the folded lines until about half an inch away from the middle of the square, and then securing the centre with a decorative brad (for more tips on this, try searching Google…you can get some really handy videos on YouTube). After adhering the pinwheel to my card, I then finished it off by sticking some punched pieces of patterned paper that I found amongst my paper scraps.

I’d love to see some of your projects using up your paper scraps! Be sure to link me up if you make any!

Gorgeous card Steph…x
Beautiful card! I’ve been using up my paper scraps by making paper flowers, did a tutorial for them on my blog the other day: http://jennifersjumbles.blogspot.com/2010/07/paper-flowers-tutorial.html
It’s good to use up some bits from the piles of scraps isn’t it? I have boxes full of bits of paper! x
Lovely card! Great way to use up all those scraps!
